Many of us are at home right now, and most likely we aren’t going anywhere. We probably aren’t going to the library, both because we are practicing social distancing and because THE LIBRARIES ARE CLOSED. What is happening? (OK, I’m only a little serious here. Not all libraries are closed – but some are, and not just because it’s Sunday.)
Thankfully, most libraries have a great array of virtual services. Here’s what I found in Michigan:
Kent District Library (closed due to you know what):
See this link to check out and download audiobooks, movies, music, children’s and adult ebooks, and magazines: https://www.kdl.org/downloads
Georgetown Township Public Library – part of the Lakeland Cooperative (appears to be open):
Click the link to stream video, get children’s, teen, and adult e-books, audiobooks, and by clicking at the bottom of this page, enter a gateway to extensive research tools: https://www.gtpl.org/376/Digital-Collections
Saginaw Public Library (updated – all branches closed):
Wow, this library has a vibrant web site! I used to work at the Butman-Fish branch while in my first two years of college. Click on the link, and then click on Hoopla, Overdrive, RBDigital Emagazines, or Kanopy (streaming video!): https://www.saginawlibrary.org/
Limited services such as telephone reference requests and tax forms are available at the Hoyt library, as of late on 3.16.
No library card?
There are countless free ebooks on Amazon – just choose Kindle Store from the dropdown menu and enter ‘free books for kindle.’ No Kindle? Just download the free Kindle app from your app store of choice.
For free audiobooks, try https://forum.librivox.org/ and click on Search the Catalog. I’ve used this resource for years, and they also have an app. Audiobooks that are in the public domain are completely free, read by volunteers. I had thought that there were some titles that cost a small amount, but as I’m looking at the site now I don’t see that. But hey, it doesn’t hurt to look. At the least, the majority of titles are free. Even the pleasure of browsing the different genres is a welcome distraction.
Peace and good health to all of you.
