Steve Hamilton was made in Michigan; he was born in Detroit and attended both Lakeland High School and the University of Michigan. Most of his novels (crime fiction) are set in the town of Paradise which is an actual town located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and feature private detective Alex McKnight. The first book of the Paradise series, A Cold Day in Paradise, won both an Edgar Award and a Shamus Award for Best First Novel. He’s written at least one book set in New York state, where he lives now, but he has made noise about writing more Paradise novels. He’s won several literary awards.
Although I firmly believe that Michigan can, at times, seem like paradise, I did not know that the Paradise Michigan in these books was a real town. Now I want to visit! It’s close to Sault Ste. Marie and overlooks Whitefish Bay.
